PATAGONIA  WEATHER

Weather in Main Regions of Argentina

Argentina is one of the largest countries in the world and therefore offers the visitor many climates. The first thing to remember is that the seasons are reversed from those of the northern hemisphere, so when it is summer in New York and London it is winter in Argentina. Salta and Iguazu Falls are warm year-round, while El Calafate and Tierra del Fuego are a bit cool in January and quite cold in July.

Patagonia is a region of Argentina. The cities of Bariloche, Calafate, Ushuaia, and the Peninsula Valdes are all located in this area. Except for the Argentine summer, southern Patagonia is in deep winter and thus is quite difficult to travel in. For weather and climate in Patagonia, please see the appropriate city because Patagonia is a very big region.

Please select the region or destination from the list on the right-hand menu or from the map below for climate information and average temperatures.

BARILOCHE AND LAKE DISTRICT WEATHER

The city of Bariloche was built next to the cold water Lake Nahuel Huapi. The climate in this region varies significantly between seasons. Winter brings cold days with abundant snowfall for skiing while the summer offers warm and sunny days ideal for exploring the beautiful country-side. The fall and spring are transition seasons with a mix of sunny and rainy days.

During the summer, daylight extends from 6am to 10pm while in the winter, daylight is from 9am to 7pm.

El CALAFATE AND SOUTHERN PATAGONIA WEATHER

Summers in El Calafate are very pleasant - sunny, dry and windy. Winters can be cold with the average temperatures of 30 °F. The most important weather factor in El Calafate is the wind that picks up force coming up from the Antarctic. In the summer the wind is usually moderate while in the winter it becomes a major consideration. Wind-proof clothing and multiple layers are both recommended for your visit to this region.

The length of the day changes according to season. In summer, the sun rises as early as 5:30am and sets at 11pm. In winter the days are shorter and there is only 8 hours of daylight. You can have up to 17 hours of solar light during the longest day of the year; December 21st.

The latitude of El Calafate is equivalent to that of London in the Northern Hemisphere.

TIERRA DEL FUEGO AND USHUAIA WEATHER

Ushuaia in the region of Tierra del Fuego in the extreme South of Argentina. Ushuaia is also the southern-most city in the world. The city has a varying climate that is not very severe as one may think because the mountains and the sea keep temperatures up and the climate mild.

October to May are the warmest months without snow, while May to October are the coldest. December to February Ushuaia has highest temperatures and 18 hours of light a day. Winters in Ushuaia get very few hours of daylight. Therefore summer months are best for hiking and trekking while skiing is popular in the wintertime.

PENINSULA VALDES WEATHER

Peninsula Valdes, the city of Puerto Madryn . This area features a peculiar climate because of the effect created by the Atlantic Ocean. Although it does not rain much in the region on an annual basis, summers are usually mild, and the temperature sometimes gets very hot and then eases off in the evening. The area does get very windy at times, especially on the peninsula , and proper clothing is recommended.

TORRES DE PAINE NATIONAL PARK WEATHER

Although the park is located in an area that includes a “mild- cool climate, rainy, without dry season”, the weather conditions observed during the year are various, depending on location, altitude, topography, or proximity to glaciers, lagoons or lakes. The characteristic aspect of the area is its thermal homogeneity, which allows tourists to visit this place in every season
