While many hotels in the area claim to have renovated since the last edition of this book, few have done so with the same level of class as the CostAustralis. This hotel has long been considered the most upscale hotel in town, and now they've overhauled the entire lobby lounge and have expanded to a new fourth level.
Floor-to-ceiling windows face out onto the sound, which means that whether you're in the bar, the restaurant, or the lounge, you always have sweeping views and a splendid evening sunset. It is a large hotel, but it retains a certain coziness, with deep couches and soft lighting. Spacious doubles come with a sea view or a somewhat depressing view of the buildings in the back; the 28 rooms on the fourth floor, though priced the same, are entirely new, with marble bathrooms and plenty of closet space, so ask for one.
The price is fairly high, even by U.S. standards, and, therefore, might not be appealing to anyone who plans to arrive late and leave early. The hotel has combined what were once two restaurants into one formal dining area. This hotel is popular with European tour groups.
