July 30, 2010

Staten Island Route

DAY 01: Depart from Ushuaia
We board the cruise and start sailing through the Beagle Channel, across the Mackinley Pass, while we’ll contemplate the wreckage of the ship LOGOS. We’ll also navigate across Le Maire Strait.

DAY 02: Exploring Staten Island and Observatory Island
Landing on the rocky coasts of Laserre anchorage, we’ll be able to have a look at San Juan de Salvamento fjord. We’ll board zodiacs to Cape San Juan de Salvamento where we shall be able to discover up to 7,500.00 Rock hoppers’ nests, other penguin colonies, marine otters, Andean condors and turkey vultures during their search for food.

To the east, a colony of approximately 1,000 South American fur seals can be observed. From Staten Island we’ll carry on to Observatory Island which has been named by James Cook as New Year’s Isles since he first set foot on it on January the 1st , 1775, this place was given its present name after the installation of a meteorological observatory in 1902. Next, the adventurers we’ll have the opportunity to take a look at a colony of sea lions from their zodiacs.

DAY 03: Exploring Port Cook, Port Vancouver and Port Hoppner
Landing at Port Cook’s gravel shore, we shall be advised to pay attention to the otters often seen among giant kelp. The expedition shall visit, then, the site and the ruins of the old military prison and we’ll take a walk on the beach up to the old cemetery.

After a walk through an elevated and narrow beach which separates the northern and southern coastal areas, we’ll reach Port Vancouver. Soon afterwards, a fifteen-minute walk will lead us to discover the shallow beach of the southern coast, there; the vegetation that prevails is the giant kelp. We move on up to Punta Rinoceronte
We’ll continue in zodiacs into Hoppner fjord, sailing across a narrow passage where the ties produce strong currents. The scenery is characterized by its jagged and sharp picks that fall abruptly into the sea and by woods that thrive. Before we return to the ship, we’ll have the chance to encounter and perhaps have a ride on the waves generated by the local currents and the gusts of wind

DAY 04: Thetis Bay and Buen Suceso Bay
By the end of our voyage, we shall visit the old coastguard building and the abandoned fur seal processing plant.

DAY 05: Arrival at Port Ushuaia
During the night we sail  back across the La Maire Strait and re-enter the beagle cahnnel.  Once more we can enjoy the wonderful scenery of both The Argentince and Chilean coasts of the famous channel before arriving Ushuaia.
